I have to admit that I have always adored yet felt slightly out of step with the other herbalists I have studied with, trained, and walked alongside of on my journey. As time passes it has become clearer and clearer that I am here as a student of relationship, and that my work is about bringing people to the plants to listen to what the plants know and may wish to share with us about being healthy in all our relationships. . For many, judgement (observe, judge, abandon or attack) is the only tool we were given to protect our our hearts when we are not yet aware of our own values and boundaries enough to gracefully use our words to educate others as to how to interact with us in a consensual mutually uplifting way. This is a circle for all those who seek both intimacy and longevity in community, who love life and wish to walk as stewards of self responsibility, emotional wellness and harmony with all our relations.🙏🏾
Journeying with Nourishing Herbs🌿 I love being a mother. It seems the more years I do this thing, the daily act of mothering and closely observing nature and nurture, the more that concepts like boundaries, self love, and self care that used to seem abstract have begun to feel quite simple and concrete. And I love how this process of growing up through mothering is unfolding in community, and how in San Diego where we live, self care and magic go hand in hand and the healers and space holders that I know take really good care of themselves and the earth, saying yes when they mean yes and no when they mean no, and offering to others from a place of abundance. Oh Tobacco🍂. When I first began to communicate with this land my intention to bring others here to heal, the words that came where “We are coming to heal our broken hearts” Heartbreak is a complex constellation of emotionally traumatic experiences, and I have discovered that as a someone on the Medicine Path, my fathers abusive relationship to tobacco was one of my first heartbreaks. And I know we can always be reset, heal, and ask for a do-over, so I have been calling for a do-over of our relationship to tobacco in the west, realizing how much it hurt my heart as a child to see my father struggle with his addiction. . My sister and I used to steal his cigarettes, rip them up and sprinkle them in the woods. I remember my anger and disbelief at him for smoking and total sense of entitlement to return the tobacco to the earth at every opportunity. I have found that I cannot heal my relationship with my father and with the sacred masculine without healing my relationship to tobacco, and so I have begun to sit and listen to this wise elder teacher- not smoke, just listen and pray with them, being spoken to of patience, attention, and goal- lessness. I have begun teaching my son about the conciousness that lives within tobacco just as I would begin to tell him stories of our other family members that he has yet to meet, so that when he finally does, I know that he will greet them with kindness, curiosity and respect and love. 🙏🏾🌿🙏🏾 . . 👆🏽My Teachers👆🏽 . It is not easy to make sense of roles and structures and titles. I just discovered that today is teacher appreciation day, and I have spent so much time in the last year unpacking my issues with the word teacher and all the associations we carry about environments where we have given our power away, where the title was taken, not given. And yet, I have such a deep love of learning, and many people for whom the word flows from my lips as an ecstatic expression of gratitude for all I am learning from our relationship! So what I have decided is that a teacher is just an eternal student. Someone who loves to learn and loves to share. And I am loving being in the biggest learning experience of my life with these 20 as my teachers! I prayed for more guidance and it has arrived! One million thank you’s to these #medicinemandalaapprenticeship sisters who are teaching me so much and holding me accountable to my dream and my purpose in the most indescribably beautiful profound ways. I am eternally grateful to the purity of your hearts and your prayers, and the opportunity to witness you deepen your committment to serving the sacred in this life- Jai Gaia Ma!

“Being a first generation immigrant in San Diego has opened my mind and kitchen to the ways of the border. Most food is regulated, but we are still allowed to go to Mexico and come back with the ingredients we need to cook with. When we think of local nourishment, we don’t often think that that may apply to food grown in a different country, but in the case of southern California sourcing quality nutritional foods from Mexico, it absolutely can! I like to be as involved with my food as possible. That means growing some of it and creating relationships with others that also grow their own. The medicine of place is bioregional, not about cities or countries. What grows in South California, grows in Baja California, in Mexico. Names don't matter! Soil is what matters, water is what matters, seeds are what matter, and ancestral knowledge, held by indigenous plant/human/animal people since times before borders even existed is everything.” ~Damiana Calvario, Lead Kitchen Witch for @medicinemandala 2018 . . This year @laluneria apprenticed in the kitchen for our Medicine Mandala Green Magic Apprenticeship on a work-trade scholarship.
