Favorite Designers (or artists, or writers, or activists): Louise Bourgeois, Swoon, and Robert Voisey (my husband- he's a composer and a new music advocate
Favorite thing about being on earth at this time? I just got married over the summer and it is a whole new world. My perspective on everything has changed. My husband has grounded me and set me free at the same time. I feel like anything is possible and having someone to support you and share that experience is surreal. I feel like an explorer in a familiar land, discovering things I never knew about myself and the world around me.
Three women you admire and why?
Maya Deren, I think she was a fearless pioneer in avant-garde film. Her courage and vision is a constant source of inspiration for me.
My Mother, Meda. She is a selfless person, constantly sacrificing for those she loves, always maintaining a strong heart and mind. And she laughs everyday. And is a great dancer.
Pamela Love, my dear friend. I have watched her grow and build her art and passion. Her determination, will and hard work has been inspiring to watch. And her nurture and care for others is limitless.
Favorite albums to listen to in the studio right now? Fleetwood Mac, Electric Light Orchestra, and Of Montreal.
How did Spoke Woven come to be? Number of years in business? Number of dreamcatchers sold?
There was a point in my life when I went into a really black hole. An abyss. I had lost my job and just basically had given up on love. My most dear friend pamela love, basically- resuscitated my soul with just simply believing in me. She told me to make her the biggest dreamcatcher I could. It was for her very first fashion week presentation at milk studios. I had no idea how to make one, so I figured it out. With the support of friends, of course, and a lot of work they have grown and continue to morph and change with all the amazing people I get to collaborate with. But it all started from Pam. I can't even tell you. She saved my life and the dreamcatchers are guardian angels.
We've sold about 200+ dreamcatchers. And have been doing this for 1.5 years.
What inspires you/ what do you think about when you are working?
What inspires me all the time is the people I have the opportunity to work with. Each person has such an amazing vision and story to tell. It is seriously awing to be part of the collaborative process of realizing another person's vision.
Favorite article of clothing and why?
A Jim Jarmusch t shirt. My husband surprised me with it on our second date.
Any good dreams lately?
I have a recurring dream that comes once a year around this time. I am 6 years old, wearing my favorite bathing suit from that time- a green and white polka dot one piece with a 3-D red flower at the top of the chest. In the dream I am a spy participating in the French Revolution and am married to King Kong. I have been having this dream since I was 6.
What’s next for SW?
We just moved out of my apt in Harlem and into a tiny studio in Brooklyn. We are hoping to launch the website, and keep collaborating with amazing people and other designers. It has been a whirlwind of inspiration and awe.
There are also some other prototypes in the works for next year.... We are dreaming big. : )
